The Cephalopod Coffeehouse: August Edition

Image
It's time for the always fun monthly meeting of book loving bloggers hosted by  The Armchair Squid .  The idea is to share a book that you have read this month and then head out and check out what everybody else read.  It's a great way to add to your To Be Read list with books you may not have come across otherwise. My favourite read this month comes from Canada's female literary legend, Margaret Atwood .  Having been a huge fan since the first time I read The Handmaid's Tale in high school I didn't think there was much she had written that I hadn't already devoured.  Apparently I was wrong.   Alias Grace is a work of historical fiction based around Grace Marks a Canadian maid who in 1843 was convicted in the murder of her employer Thomas Kinnear.  I read through the  trial  after in the Toronto Library collection and it was almost as fascinating as the book to me.  A big part of the draw to this story for me is that this happened not far from w

Throwback Thursday: Cat

Since I have spent what feels like every waking minute this week at my office I thought I would post an old picture of Cat visiting Mommy at work.  Tiny and cute she was.

Celebrate The Small Things

Image
Here we are again at Friday which means it's time to look back over the week and celebrate what made it easier to get through.  This blog hop is hosted by Scribblings of an Aspiring Author .  It's been another not so easy week here so counting my blessings makes it much easier on me to remember that things will get better. - Ace is home safe and sound. - He brought me a fancy new hat when he came home. - Ace and I spent the afternoon at Wonderland on Wednesday and got to go on the Skyrider before they retire it on September 1. Please visit the other bloggers who are participating and see what they are celebrating this week and then join in and tell us what you are celebrating.

Throwback Thursday: Friends

Image
One of the things I often notice when I go through my collection of pictures is that I don't have a lot of pictures of myself.  It's not an ingrained habit for me to remember to force my friends to take pictures when we are together or my family either but it is very important.   A part of the reason why I started to do the Throwback Thursday posts was to remind myself of that so that I take more pictures with the people I love.  Even if the moment isn't picture perfect, because one day it will be.   Today's picture is one of me and one of my closest friends from my cousins birthday party a couple years ago.  We don't get as much time to hang out as we used to because of how our lives have changed but we try.   Do you remember to take pictures when you can?

Celebrate The Small Things

It's time once again for my favourite blog hop Celebrate the Small Things hosted by  Scribblings of an Aspiring Author .  This week has been full of ups and downs but I have come out of it ok in the end and looking forward to the weekend and a chance to unwind.  On my celebration list this week are: - Ace comes home this Sunday.  Yay! - I have made great progress with Physio and now have virtually no pain in my knee. Throwback Thursday: Ace

Image
This is Ace's last Thursday away, Sunday night he comes home, thank goodness.  I love knowing that he is having fun and enjoying all these life enriching experiences but I miss him terribly.  Plus it's time to start getting ready to go back to school and I want to squeeze as much into the last few days of summer vacation with them as I can. Today's picture is a fun summer one from Canada's Wonderland, I have a ton of those in my collection, we seem to live there in the summer.

Girl's Day Out With Cat

Image
The good thing about Ace being away is that Cat and I have gotten to spend a lot of good quality mother/daughter time together.  Her favourite thing to do when we do this of course is to go to  Canada's Wonderland  because she is a die hard thrill seeker already.  Plus you can experience so many things in one day, which is fun when you are a kid.  (or an adult) One of Cat's favorite things to do when her brother isn't there is watch ALL the shows as she is very into singing and dancing.  (what 5 year old girl isn't)  So off we went to check the schedules for what was playing when. We discovered that the British Invasion show was starting shortly so we got our souvenir cup filled up and grabbed a seat nice and close to the stage.  We went on a magical journey through five decades of British contributions to music.  It was a lot of fun, Cat's favorite part was the dancing whereas I was in love with all the costumes. Afterwards we went on some rides, in

Throwback Thursday: Ace

Image
Week two of Ace being away is under our belt and we are surviving.  In some ways having only one kid is so much easier but in a lot of ways Ace makes things easier on both Cat and I because he helps so much. Cat's bored while Mom's making dinner?  No problem, he can read with her or show her something neat in his new National Geographic.  Without crutch I have to come up with ways to entertain her while I cook, so she has been having cooking lessons, we have had some seriously over spiced fish but other than that it is going well. Today's picture of Ace is from when he first got his glasses, what an adorable little monkey he was then.

Celebrate The Small Things

It's that time of the week again, time to look back and celebrate the little things that brought joy into my life this week.  This wonderful blog hop is hosted by  Scribblings of an Aspiring Author . - I didn't work the long weekend thanks to my fabulous co-worker Marion, I hope she knows how I much I appreciate her working for me. Please check out what everyone else is celebrating this week:

Blogging For Books: Dear Luke, We Need To Talk, Darth

Image
My second book choice for Blogging For Books was John Moe's Dear Luke, We Need To Talk, Darth.  This sounded like such a fun book to me, I am a huge fan of written correspondence, my pen pals regularly get pages (yes pages) of me rambling about absolutely nothing.  Well almost nothing, Cat's doll preference, annoying moms at parties, cosplay plans, you know the same stuff I blog about but in more detail.  So I somehow assumed that a book about fictional pop culture correspondences would be interesting.   You know what they say about making assumptions. I just didn't love this book and I feel bad for not liking it.  If I had read it ten years ago I probably would have loved it, or at least parts of it.  There are certain parts of it I would have still felt were a waste of my time to read.   The thing that didn't work about this book for me is that I am an Internet addict, so I read a great deal of pretty witty pop culture correspondence stuff EVERY SINGLE D

It's time once again for the Celebrate The Small Things Blog Hop hosted by  Scribblings of an Aspiring Author . - Cat and I spent a fun filled day out at Wonderland with no stress. - I found a great costume for Cat for Fan Expo in the markdown section at the party store. - I found great the perfect photo albums to house my expanding postcard collection on sale.  (I think there's a trend, I can't resist a good sale) -we went to see Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds last which was a great show but more importantly a fantastic night out Check out the other participating bloggers at the links below:
