The Cephalopod Coffeehouse: September 2014

Image
The last Friday of the month is time for The Cephalopod Coffeehouse, a chance for bloggers to get together and discuss the best books they have read in the last month.  Hosted by  The Armchair Squid  it is among my favourite of the blog hops I regularly participate in because I get to add books to my ever expanding to be read list. This month in the pile of books I consumed it was a reread of Fables Vol 1: Legends in Exile that stood out for me.  I got the first three volumes for Christmas a few years ago and it was love at first read.  The art, the storyline, there's nothing to not love about Fables.  Then I had trouble finding Volume Six and we have been at a stand still as far as progressing ever since. Then on a trip to  The Silver Snail  for an unrelated graphic novel (which I also could not find) I picked up Volumes Six and Seven so that prompted the start of a reread, because who wants to start in the middle? Reading this again reminded me of how much I loved

Throwback Thursday: Kids

Image
When I was going through my pictures I came across this picture of Cat and Ace from the summer of 2011. I just thought it was the best picture, they look so adorable.  And clean, it's not often they look clean.  It must have been taken at the start of the day.

Express Yourself: Childhood Aspirations

Image
The Express Yourself Weekly Meme is hosted  Bouquet Of Books  and  Entertaining Interests .  I have been reading it for a while and I always want to jump in but I have been hesitant to bite off another thing to do right now.   However there will never be a perfect time to do something, so I decided to just jump right in and figure it out as I went along.  The question this week is what did you want to be when you grew up? The first thing I ever remember wanting to be was a doctor, my doctor when I was a kid was just the coolest woman and I wanted to be just like her.  Until the first time she gave me a needle and I discovered that doctors just like nurses have to give needles.  That just wasn't going to happen, I hate needles. After that it was a succession of little kid ambitions mermaid, firefighter, princess and then I read A Wrinkle In Time.  Since that day I have wanted to be a writer and though there have been many bumps in the road I have every intention of gett

Throwback Thursday: Family

Image
Last year we went on a awesome walking tour of the battle ground of The War of 1812 with Richard of Muddy York Walking Tours .  It was a great experience and the kids had a blast. This is my favorite picture from that day, happy family.

An Afternoon With Ace

Image
The Wednesday after he got back from Calgary I skipped out of work for the afternoon and kept Ace back from camp and we headed out to  Canada's Wonderland  for the afternoon.  They are taking down the  SkyRider  this year and I wanted to make sure he got a chance to ride on it before they did. I think it was fitting that my last ride on SkyRider, which has been one of my favourite roller coasters in twenty odd years of going to Wonderland was Ace's first.  He approached it very bravely given that he is not a roller coaster kid.  I got the best video of his reaction after though. After his roller coaster experience Ace wanted to do something that was a little more his speed so he dragged me on  WindSeeker .  Then proceeded to laugh his butt off while I tried not to cry for my mommy as I may have an issue or two with heights.  Revenge received. Then we went on  Time Warp  for a little less scary roller coaster time for Ace, apparently this one he can handle even th

Confessions Of A Blogger

I found this tag on  Geek Gets Glam  for a blogger confession and I thought I would swipe it and answer the questions even though I didn't get tagged.  Because I'm a rebel like that as you all know. When did you start your blog? My first blog post was Wednesday, January 18, 2012.  It feels like so long ago now. Have you had any past online presence before (other blog, YouTube)? No, this is my very first attempt at making myself known in the internet world. Why did you start a blog? To encourage myself to write more and to decrease my fear of letting other people read my writing.  The stuff I put on my blog is not quite the same as writing a novel but it's still writing and sometimes I still lock up in fear.  I am getting better though. When did you become serious about starting a blog? I am still not entirely sure that has happened yet, I am getting better about blogging on a regular basis though, What was your first post? My first post,  Rated R for Rand

Library Things Review: Wednesdaymeter

Image
I got this book in a  Library Thing  member giveaway in exchange for an honest review. Book Summery: An eggplant wails, a ladder breaks, and the guise of civility shatters... A professor of festival studies, a potato hunter, a deadly career councilor and a part-time terrorist are struggling to retain their sanity in a magically mundane city.  Their carefully laid out plans fall apart when they meet Mr. Pearson, an everyman who suspects a conspiracy of evil polygons behind his company's absurd practices.  Theirs is a world in which people use raw produce and wasted time to alter reality.  If it were not for the stringent safety standards on fruits and vegetables, the citizens would live in misery.  Most live a life of willful ignorance instead, desperate to avoid facing the threats surrounding them.   Festival season is about to begin, but the colorful banners cannot hide the tragic past any longer. The above was taken from Dean Carnby's  Wednesdaymeter  site

Celebrate The Small Things

Image
It's time again for the Celebrate the Small Things blog hop hosted by  Scribblings of an Aspiring Author .  It's a chance to look back over the week and remember the things big and small that made it a little brighter. This week I have a huge thing to celebrate in the good samaritan that returned my phone to me after I lost it on Wednesday.  It's always amazing when you are on the receiving end of a good deed and in this case I am especially grateful as I keep many other things in my phone case as well. Want to tell us what you are celebrating this week?  Add your blog to the list and join in.  Don't forget to check out what others had to say.

Throwback Thursday: Cat

Image
When I look at Cat now I have trouble remembering when she was this small, it just won't connect in my mind with where she is now.  She's just growing up way too fast. This picture is from the Santa Claus parade a few years ago.

Cat's Library Review: Scooby Doo! Mummies at the Mall

Image
With Cat starting Senior Kindergarten this year and a hyper focus on her learning ALL THE THINGS in order to be able to be able to make it into Grade One I thought I would add a fun new addition to the blog where we followed along with her progress. One of the things we were looking forward to most this year was seeing if she could get big kid books out from the library at school instead of the ones that come with one word on the page.  I am a firm believer if they don't hold their interest, they won't help them with reading.  For her very first library day she chose Scooby Doo! Mummies at the Mall because we have been watching Scooby Doo! on NetFlix. My favourite things about this book was the activities that were included to encourage the young reader to participate actively in the book.  We are big fans of active participation in our house.  Cat's favourite part of the book was King and Queen.   It's definitely a fun silly read and overall we give i

Celebrate The Small Things

Image
Friday rolls around again quicker than ever these days and with school having started up again I have a feeling the weeks are just going to get faster and faster.  Friday means it's time once again to celebrate the past week with  Scribblings of an Aspiring Author . My big celebration this week is that today is my co-worker Marion's birthday.  Happy Birthday Marion!  May you celebrate many more.  I could not get through the long deary days without you. The kids are back to school and so far everyone likes their teachers and hopefully at some point they will stop bringing me home reams of paperwork to fill out. Also in happy news, I did not give myself a concussion last night when I decided to bash my head open with the door.  I did however get to spend some lovely bonding time with my sister waiting to see the doctor.  Plus I got juice boxes on sale on the way home.  Yay bright side! This is a blog hop so check out this links below to see what everyone else had to cel

Throwback Thursday: Back To School

Image
There is nothing quite like the kids heading back to school to make me feel all weepy and nostalgic.  With Cat heading into Senior Kindergarten and Ace going of to Grade Four it's a sharp reminder that they are growing up far faster then I ever though possible. Despite Ace being too grumpy to late me take a back to school picture this year (apparently 9 is too cool for that?)  I thought I would throwback to last years pictures and remind myself of how much they have changed.  I got a little teary eyed at this.  Miss Cat at least has changed so much.   It's hard to believe a whole year has passed already.
