A to Z Challenge : A


Welcome to the first day of the A to Z Challenge.   Is everyone ready to learn some new words with me?

Augur (verb)
Definition: to give promise of something to come later.
Sentence: "I may augur, from the silence of my family, that they object to the resolution I have taken." - Charles Dickens, David Copperfield

Anathema (noun)
Definition: a person or thing detested, loathed, or hated.
Sentence: That subject is the anathema to all he stands for.

Ailurophobia (noun)
Definition:  an abnormal fear of cats.
Sentence: The doctor diagnosed Fred with ailurophobia because of his fear of cats.

Abacinate (verb)
Definition: blind by holding a red-hot metal plate before someone's eyes.
Sentence: The prisoners were abacinated by their captors.

Adventitious (adjective)
Definition: happening or carried on according to chance rather than design or inherent nature.
Sentence: My adventures were always adventitious, always thrust on me."

    1. I had a lot of fun doing them, there are a lot of weird words out there. :) My vocabulary has expanded a great deal.

  5. Oh I like new words, thank you! I often come up with words and think 'wow! That is a cool word that feels right for my writing' And I have no idea how I know the word I just do. And when I look it up in the dictionary it means what I feel.
