A is for Alice Through The Looking Glass

This was is my all time favorite book.  When I was 10ish my grandfather gave my gorgeously illustrated copies of both Alice in Wonderland and Alice Through the Looking Glass for Christmas.   Twenty some years later not only do I still have the books but it stand out as the most thoughtful gift anyone has ever given me.  (I never thought he paid that much attention)

The books are from Dragon's World publishing and are illustrated by Malcolm Ashman.

Anyhow, my favorite thing from Alice Through the Looking Glass (other than her conversation with Dinah) is, of course, the Jabberwocky poem.  So here it is for your enjoyment.


JABBERWOCKY
Lewis Carroll

'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves, 
And the mome raths outgrabe.

"Beware the Jabberwok, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!"

He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the manxome foe he sought --
So rested he by the Tumtum tree, 
And stood awhile in thought.

And, as in uffish thought he stood, 
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood, 
And burbled as it came!

One, two! One, Two! And through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.

"And, has thou slain the Jabberwock?

    Great books and an even better poem! Carroll is a nonsensical genius. My favorite childhood book is "The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle".

    nice choice!
    i've never actually read them, and i have this super nifty looking book in my TBR called THE LOOKING GLASS WARS that i really want to read, but i think i better read these originals first! eeks! never enough time, huh?
    my favorite as a kid was Jerry Spinelli's REPORT TO THE PRINCIPAL'S OFFICE.

    The one book that really sticks out in my head is The Phantom Tollbooth. The reason being that it was the first book I actively sought out. I remember reading the first chapter in one of the English class anthologies. I liked it so much, I checked the school library, they didn't have it. I made my mom take me to the city library, I got my first library card that day and devoured the book that week. After that, I spent a lot of time in the library. I remember being proud of myself for locating it. I think I was nine or ten.

One of my favorite vegetables is butternut squash so when Chatelaine  posted this yummy looking recipe  for mac and cheese brimming with squash I immediately pinned it to make at a later time.  Now, before Pinterest  I am willing to admit, recipes got saved in my e-mail, but they never got made.  They just got lost in the shuffle; now they get neatly organized and displayed where I can go through them on a regular basis.  More importantly than that I can try them.   This recipe worked out well for me, I thought the cheese and squash tasted great together, the kids however did not agree.  They like their squash on the side, where they can control how much they ingest.  Next time I will definitely use less breadcrumbs though.

Spooktacular Giveaway Hop

When I was much younger than I am now, I loved nothing more that a good "spooky" story.  I spent many nights laying up in bed reading books that were designed to make your skin crawl and leave you with goose bumps. My personal favourite author for Young Adult Thrillers was and probably still is Christopher Pike.  Twenty years after reading his books some of them still stand out in my mind in perfect clarity.  The top one would be Remember Me. Something about Shari's story struck a chord with me that has echoed through the last twenty years, as any good book should I suppose. Sadly when I was a teenager I didn't hold on to as many books as I do now so I spend a lot of time hunting to replace the ones I really wish I had kept. (Sweet Valley High anyone?)
